Dorothy Mumford Williams, a member of the Alpha Zeta Chapter, graduated from Adelphi University (NY) in 1929 and earned her master’s degree from the University of North Carolina where she became a member of the English faculty. She possessed a deep sense of beauty and expressed it in lyrics, sonnets and poetry. Much of what she wrote received national acclaim. Dorothy and her family were lifelong members of the Friends Society of America and their journals published many of her works. Dorothy wrote a dramatic masque for the National Biennial Convention of the Women’s Organization of Friends of America. A collection of her poems, “The Badge of Honor,” was published by Poetry House in Brooklyn. Her artistic gifts found added expression through her talent for painting, and many pieces of critical distinction are also her legacy. In the Delta Zeta Creed, she penned a life pattern for every Delta Zeta. It was written and presented to the National Council in 1939. The beautiful words have become a part of every significant Delta Zeta event and occasion. Dorothy Mumford Williams was named Woman of the Year posthumously in 1982. Her words inspire us still.
