Julia Bishop Coleman’s contributions to Delta Zeta, from the earliest moments and continuing throughout her life, are unique among the Founders. She was the only one to marry a college sweetheart (the future Dr. John MacFerren Coleman) who witnessed the events leading to the Sorority’s founding; she is the only one to have daughters who both became Convention initiates (Mary Coleman, Miami (OH) - Alpha, and Jean Coleman Lisle Miami (OH) - Alpha); and was the only one to return to school in that critical year of 1903 to continue the work of Delta Zeta. Julia graduated from Miami University in 1904, serving her class as Vice President and poet. She was Delta Zeta’s National President from 1924 – 1926. In addition to her devotion to Delta Zeta, Julia dedicated time to community service and organizations such as the D.A.R., the P.E.O., Eastern Star and the Red Cross. Julia is remembered as a woman who not only founded, but also led Delta Zeta with honor, courage and great foresight. Julia’s pictures include one of her daughter, Jean, posing as she remembered her mother in front of her mirror.
