The esteem in which Dr. Johnston was held was exemplified in 1954 when she was chosen by Charles E. Wilson, the Secretary of Defense, to serve on the Defense Advisory Committee on Women in the Services for a four-year term. This very important committee of 50 outstanding women of the country met at the Pentagon twice each year.
