Marion Worthing

Marion Worthing, Wisconsin - Tau, was chief of staff in the research area in the State Department in Washington, D.C. She directed economic research relating to foreign, industrial, mineral and agricultural problems and held a position of trust and responsibility not commonly open to women in government at the time. She supervised a staff of analysts who carried on day-to-day business of our government with foreign countries. They regularly dealt with the foreign missions in Washington and kept close touch with our embassies abroad. Much of Marion’s work was confidential. She was responsible for representing the United States on several bilateral and multilateral international negotiations. In 1955, she attended conferences in London and Paris for the State Department. She was the 1955 Woman of the Year.
