Dr. Eunice Carmichael Roberts

Dr. Eunice Carmichael Roberts, Illinois - Alpha Beta, was the first woman academic dean in the 137-year history of Indiana University. A native of Alabama, she entered the field of education after receiving all of her degrees from the University of Illinois: her bachelor’s, Master of Arts and Doctor of Philosophy. She taught for a short time and was dean of student personnel at Lindenwood College in Missouri, the first female dean at that school. She was asked to come to Indiana University to take the newly created position of dean of faculties and director of the women’s education program. Dr. Roberts was internationally known for her work in the field of professional activities for women. She was named the 1958 Woman of the Year.
