An economic historian of the first rank, Alice Hanson Jones, Washington - Kappa, was the leading authority on the distribution of wealth in colonial America. She held research and teaching positions at the University of Washington, the University of Chicago, Claremont, the University of Washington in St. Louis and studied at the University of Vienna and the Sorbonne in France. She held the position of assistant chief of the United States Bureau of Labor Statistics. Alice participated in many professional organizations including the National Endowment for the Humanities and the National Science Foundation. She was president of the Economic History Association in 1981-1982. According to Allen Wallis, a leading statistician, Alice Jones made “a major and permanent contribution to our knowledge of the economic and social history of colonial America.” He added, “The work of Alice Hanson Jones has changed and will continue to change the course of history as we understand it.” Alice was named the Woman of the Year in 1981.
