Vee Shakarian Toner

Vee Shakarian Toner, Pittsburgh (PA) - Omicron, was known for her contributions and participation in international amateur sports. She worked to promote sportsmanship and a love of amateur sports among youth and helped young athletes to become better citizens through sports. In 1956, Vee managed and chaperoned the United States Olympic women’s swimming team in Melbourne, Australia, a job she rated at the top of the near endless list of sports volunteer work she did. Her husband shared her interest in sports and together they attended all major high school, college and professional sporting events in Pittsburgh, as well as participating together in officiating at AAU (Association of American Universities) tennis, swimming and track events. Vee Toner was the recipient of many awards and recognition. They include the Distinguished Alumnae Award from Pittsburgh College of Arts and Science. She was the first woman to be so honored. Vee was the 1969 Woman of the Year.
