Gail Brook Burket, Illinios - Alpha Beta, was a poet, a special talent who achieved literary recognition on a national scale. She was a 1929 Phi Beta Kappa graduate from the University of Illinois with a master’s degree in English from Northwestern University. Over 400 of her poems, short articles and books were published. Her books include “Courage, Beloved!” and “Blueprint for Peace.” A number of her compositions were set to music. She served as National Poetry Chairman of the National League of American Pen Women. Her writings and readings have been highlights of celebrations for special events. She favored Delta Zeta by writing a sonnet for the 50th Anniversary Convention titled “Golden Jubilee of Delta Zeta.” Gail Burket’s philosophy and optimism was that of a realist, yet showed the sensitivity of the artist. Married to a prominent surgeon, she was the first president of the Women’s Auxiliary of the United States and Canadian Section of the International College of Surgeons (I.C.S.). She was 1954 Woman of the Year.
